John- Thanks for the comment! The Changeling is one of the few horror films that has ever given me the creeps, as a child or an adult. To this day if I were to watch it in a room with the lights out I...

I'd have to say Dracula (1931) from the earlier films, since the sets, the atmosphere, and the feel were so delightfully creepy. The original Nosferatu also captured a lot of creepy atmosphere, but...

In Schindlers List, the hellish roar of the Auschwitz chimney always terrifies me.

Lots of great picks! I'd add DAUGHTER OF HORROR. And most of David Lynch. I definitely would NOT want to live in most of Lynch's films. Creepy fun to visit, though.

Lots of good movies mentioned, but one that comes to mind that hasn't been mentioned is I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE.

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and 13 GHOSTS always scared me ~ those movies are nothing BUT atmosphere! I'd put Norman Bates' house and motel in there too. "Snips and snails and poppydoc tails...."

I would add that the film FREAKS, in particular the latter darker half of the movie, has a spooky atmosphere that is unsurpassed.

The Hammer Hound is great, and Cushing was very, very, good. It may be his single best performance. But I would suggest that Jeremy Brett eclipses just about every actor who has tackled the Holmes...

DEAD MEN WALK....the scenes in the dark field at night with the light of the moon really evoke a chilly mood. This is an under-rated George Zucco film, to be sure. CARNIVAL OF SOULS when Mary Henry is...

Most of the previous picks are dead on, but are a few more to thin about: MESSIAH OF EVIL seems like it takes place in a world of the dead. The whole thing is unnatural. ISLE OF THE DEAD also has some...

Agreeing with Dracula and Carnival of Souls. The sets in Dracula are very well done, certainly my favorite movie sets, but there's more to the atmosphere than that. The whole lack of sound in a sound...
